Know Your Stones

Katarina Jazbec’s Know Your Stones is an arthouse documentary that listens as much as it looks—an exploration of the steel and lignite industry’s global impact, told through the voices of those who sustain it and those who resist it. Our role at Driftwood Audio was to craft a sonic landscape that captures the weight of industry, the fragility of protest, and the tension that lingers in between.

We wove together raw, textural sound design and evocative music to mirror the film’s contrasting perspectives. The mechanical roars of factories, the rhythmic hammering of steel, and the guttural drone of mining machinery stand in stark contrast to the quiet resolve of activists and the uneasy silence of a landscape in transition. Through careful layering and immersive spatialization, we shaped a sound world where industry feels immense yet crumbling—where progress and destruction walk hand in hand.

Beyond sound design, our music serves as an emotional undercurrent, threading together moments of apprehension, defiance, and reflection. The result is a deeply atmospheric auditory experience that lingers, much like the scars left on the earth itself.

With Know Your Stones, we aimed not just to amplify the documentary’s message but to embody it—turning sound into a force as visceral as the industry it portrays.
